中国美术学院万曼壁挂研究室成立于1986年4月，由保加利亚功勋艺术家万曼教授(马林·瓦尔班诺夫 Maryn Varbanov)创建和执导。1989年由文化部正式命名，它是中国第一个从事当代纤维艺术创作与教学的机构。1986年，万曼壁挂研究所创作的三幅作品入选国际上享有权威的瑞士“洛桑国际壁挂双年展”,实现了中国现代纤维艺术走向世界的零的突破,同时揭示了中国艺术进入国际艺坛的特色之路。

 

万曼壁挂研究所始终坚持万曼倡导的向着综合性的当代艺术创作发展的方向，重视现代纤维艺术不断开拓和实验的过程,重视纤维材料的运用和空间形态的不断挖掘。三十多年来中国美术学院在当代纤维艺术领域内的创作一直处于中国领先的学术地位，作品频繁参加国内外重要的当代艺术展。

 

2003年万曼壁挂研究所与雕塑系结合，创建了“纤维与空间艺术”工作室。它将纤维艺术直接与造型艺术相结合,将当代纤维艺术的造物实验带入造型艺术领域，深入存在层面的人文与自然主题，从纤维材料的日常性与当下社会的种种境遇中来着眼于人类生存空间的审视和相应的社会消费倾向的批判。其教学包含本、硕、博三个层面,成为中国美术学院当代艺术创作和教育的重要一支。2015年纤维艺术独立成系，归属雕塑与公共艺术学院。更名为当代纤维艺术研究所。



Contemporary Fiber Art Institute (Varbanov Fiber Art Research Centre)

 

Founded in April of 1986, by the famous Bulgarian artist of Merit Professor Maryn Ivanov Varbanov, who is one of the most influential figures in the history of Chinese and international contemporary art. As the first institution that is engaged in fiber art teaching and art creation, it was formalized by the Ministry of Culture in 11989.in1986, three artworks from Varbanov Fiber Art Research Centre had been chosen into The Lausanne International Tapestry Biennials, the most authoritative art exhibition in Switzerland. It achieved the zero breakthrough of that Chinese modern fiber art stepped to the world stage. Moreover, it indicated the route of Chinese art to be a focus of the international art world. 

 

Varbanov Fiber Art Research Centre always sticks to follow the direction of making comprehensive contemporary art works. It values the process of exploring new area of fiber art. It also attaches a great importance of using materials and spatial forms. China Academy of Art has become immersed in avant-garde practices and education in fiber as form of contemporary art for more than thirty years. Numerous works frequently present on the important contemporary art events in domestic and overseas.

 

In 2003, Varbanov Fiber Art Research Centre teamed up with Department of Sculpture to establish"Fiber and Space Art Studio". It directly combines fiber art with plastic arts together. It brings some experiments of creating in the contemporary fiber art into plastic arts which penetrate  into existential themes of humanity and natural. It should look at human living space and associated criticism of social consumption by ordinary fiber and various conditions in the society. It offers degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. It has been vital force for contemporary art reation and education in the China Academy of Art. In 2015, it became the department of fiber art which is attributed to the School of Sculpture and Public Art. now rebranded as Contemporary Fiber Art Institute.
